Think I got something! I'm well over 200 words, trying to see where it would logically go so I can work on making the opening feel more natural. It's always the worst part of the Hook contest for me, trying to come up with a full concept to match those pesky little 200 words and then letting it just slip on into the recycling bin.

Um... I guess I better get writing something. I have sort of an idea? Not sure I like it though...

I discovered last night at work, my phone or maybe the WORD 365 app also has read aloud capabilities.
It sounds nice.
An afterthought, could a contest be done where we upload a read aloud piece?

There's a story idea I've had before that might fit, but it's probably hard to convey the premise in 200 words. And I don't want to just force out one of the mediocre ideas. For all three past hook contests, I've come up with a better idea after the contest ended — including the one I won. For that, I had a probably more fun idea that I suspect would've been equally well received. I keep regretting it when I just pick an okay idea that fits the prompt and try to dress it up as interesting. An afterthought, could a contest be done where we upload a read aloud piece? Would be interesting to hear people read their own work! I dislike my voice, but I'd give it a try.

Geez...I only recall trying out maybe one previous contest? One of those short story ones. May not have been one. Either way, this is a nice detour from editing my book. As much as I love doing that. And I have one new idea vomited on Google Docs. I kind of want one other to choose between. Two different genres.

They're really meant to be fun and a way to get critiques. To stretch ourselves, explore different narrative voices, try other genres and styles we might not want to commit to using for an entire novel or series. Have fun! Glad to see you here!

Instinctively, I want to edit my bigger project to not fall behind. Eh, this won't do that. I need to practice.

Glad that you’re all having fun, these aren’t even close for me. It’s like working on my own activated voodoo doll.

I think I finished my entry? Maybe? Gotta figure out a title though. Argh.

Why thank you Raveneye. It’s a combination of self expectations with a sprinkle of what I feel others expect of my writing and a dash of xenophobia as I morph a word salad into a cognizant paragraph. My history precedes me, along with my writing style. I’d not be surprised if 90% can figure my story out, though it might be the same with all entries.
I’m happy with what I have created. An opening to a story idea that had none.

Glad that you’re all having fun, these aren’t even close for me. It’s like working on my own activated voodoo doll. Oh yea I haven't found the right idea yet. I wrote three very terrible things yesterday. They were heavy handed and too intense, yet the narrative voice was cold and distant. So....yikes. Trying to land on the right balance is hard! I get it.

I just completely redid my entire dang entry. I still like the first one, but I don't think that stylistically it was best for this contest. A new opening popped into my head, and I made it much farther much faster with that one.

200 words can’t give the reader everything, so which is most important, conflict, tension, curiosity, location, character description, setting, etc? Unfortunately, the reader determines that.

Pelwrath, anything short is unusually hard for my head to wrap around. So the feeling is understandable. My ideas normally fit longer pieces.
