The Price of Love
“I was never a fan of our son’s choice in women, but this last one.” The king heavily sighed.
“He’s young, impetuous, and in love.” The queen laid her hand on his. “Do you remember falling for me?”
“Yes, I do.” He smiled as their hands entwined. “Love isn’t blind.”
“I know.”
“Her face launched a thousand ships and that god awful wooden horse, filled with plague-bearers. Troy, my wedding present to you, is lost.”
“At least Paris and Helen have settled in his wedding present to her, what did he call it?”
“Rome was the name he chose.”

Irrevocable
They blamed the blight on the bats. But bats don’t lay waste to thousands of miles of land, turning it black and brittle. The bats merely fled the miasma that pursued them. The fruit dropped rotten before it ripened; the birds tumbled from the sky. The water turned to sludge, and the fish choked. My people dismantled their houses, loaded the carts, and moved ahead of the ruin. Onward, ever onward, and always the blight creeping behind them.
I stayed, my courage as rotten as the apples. I couldn’t tell them. I’m the plaguebearer. I spoke the curse in anger.

Now I Lay Me Down...
Bedknobs are innocuous things.
Or so one is led to believe.
I purchased my antique mahogany four-poster at an estate sale and eagerly anticipated its delivery. It cost far more than I could afford but I simply had to have it. On the day of arrival, I waited anxiously for nightfall. The quartet of hand-carved protectors atop each upright would guarantee peaceful slumbers and banish the plaguebearing terrors that constantly invaded my dreams.
But the winged guardians were not all they seemed. They chittered at each other in the darkness and whispered to me that I should continue the legacy.
