Does any story end up as what we intended? You're right about being our own wrost critic. What I have so far is gelling. It's me, I've no illusion that I could slip a story past you without knowing it was mine. I have, no we all have a voice, a style that can be unique. Yet, that's what readers of our books like and to disapoint a reader, intentionally, would be something I'd never do, to those who buy them and to you my peers. A passion for writting, becomes a passion in writting. Very true and wise sentiments. And once again...I dumped that story and started a whole new one and it's just flowing. It has the vibe I want and I know the ending and I don't hate it so WIN.

Whew, finished my first draft. Now I've got to cut 450 words to make it fit the word count. Blech. So glad there's time to figure out how to get 'er done.

Congrats Raveneye! As for mine, I'm looking at it again tonight, after two days away from it. Added some words and will let it sit for a bit again. It doesn't look like exceeding the word limit will be an issue, but that's why it sits for a while.

YES! Finished my first draft of the story. Now I can let it rest until after Christmas. I really like it and look forward to how it does in the contest. Might be one of my best pieces, though I could be wrong. Sometimes I think I write a crap story and then it does well. Then I think I write something really good and it fails. So....who knows. But I still like it!
I'm loving having so much time to write! It took a while to even get a good idea brewing. This feels good.

Did my first pass with my utility knife, but I still need to cut 200 words! Gotta get meaner and leaner.

Boy, some of you guys are really on the ball. I'm strongly considering scrapping what little I do have and just calling it a day on this challenge.

Boy, some of you guys are really on the ball. I'm strongly considering scrapping what little I do have and just calling it a day on this challenge. Been there, it's rough. The last couple contests I've had to start and scrap multiple stories even though I liked them enough they didn't feel right. I have so many story beginning in my documents, it's ridiculous.

Mine is 'dubious.' I haven't felt like working on it because I suspected my idea isn't suited for a story under 3000 words. I'm at about 1200, which includes some beginning, some end, and very little of the 'meat' of the story. And the setup isn't even done. I don't want to keep writing just to find I'm at 3000 words and didn't have room to develop things. I guess what I need to do is come up with a few succinct scenes that convey what needs to be conveyed.

I finally cut enough words. A painful process. Does it benefit the story? Yes. Do I have a second version with those words left in? Yes. Will read through it one last time after Christmas, then submit it to you, Scintilla.

You three have a je ne sais quo about your writing. Like the ability to make people believe it actually is almond milk, and that’s what makes your story’s so enjoyable to read. My tall tale is in a similar position. I’ll check it a last time tonight and get it in after Christmas.

Feeling more than a bit "bleah" about my attempt but I'll probably work on it a little more and if I feel it's at least worth reading, send it in after Christmas. My muse is such a diva these days.

Foxxglove, your stories are also a joy to read, and I’m looking forward to each story that’ll be submitted, with baited breath.

Got to over 2000 words yesterday and I really don't know. I like my idea, but I don't think 1000 more words is enough to build it up. I'll keep at it, but if it's unfinished by 3000 I might have to just forgo this contest and post the full story elsewhen.
Though at the same time, this idea doesn't feel like it should be more than a brief story. If I get too caught up in certain wrong details, I'd be missing the point and misleading the reader about what kind of story it is. Hmm, after work I'll think about how I can keep this short and trim some of the introduction.
