Maybe authors should ask: how do I make a professional book cover?
I make my own, and help others with their cover designs from time to time. I think it is important that authors keep as self-contained and authentic as possible.
My book covers may not win awards, but at least the designs are unconventional in a creative and eye-catching way. And, if I want to upgrade in a few years, I don't have to do anything but make another one!
Thank you, Dawn

I like making my own covers too. That said, there are a few effects I simply cannot figure out how to do myself. Comes from self-teaching how to use GIMP, I guess, and not diving too deeply into tutorials. I might try GetCovers next time: getcovers.com/book-cover-design/ Heard about this service during a write meetup with some Nebula folks a couple weekends back, and when I saw that a premium cover is only $35, I felt it was at least worth trying. Cuz I would looooove to have covers like those listed as examples on their home page, and that's a level of awesome I cannot replicate. Yet.

I've been debating on if I should use MidJourney for my book cover. What are your thoughts on using the platform for that?

Oh, I'm definitely gonna do it. Only thing is that a person has to be a subscriber to have permission to use the AI's art for commercial purposes. ....Oh really?! Yup. The info is somewhere in their Terms and Services. And here's another example of why I'm gonna do it (in addition to the example of the demon eye cover above). Another EMBARRASING contrast. This one isn't as embarrassing as the earlier share, BUT STILL. Again with the spoiler tags cuz I can't stand it. The best I could do without AI help for the first novel of my epic fantasy series: ... versus ... results after help from that glorious AI bot: Still having trouble with font design/color, but this will work for now... I'm also wondering if a graphic artist at GetCovers could be handed the image file and work their magic to get the fonts right, along with borders, spine info, etc. I KNOW they can produce those 3D book images we see in marketing images, so THAT would be worth a few bucks.

What prompt did you use to get the wording right? I mostly just use photoshop for book titles.

For this image I used the prompt: "a handsome 20 year old sorcerer with long dark hair, wearing a blue robe, full body, intense blue eyes, conjuring blue fire, in the background a forest, Octane Render, cinematic lighting --ar 2:3" MJ seems to like "conjuring" better than "summoning" for magic things...
