Our first Casual Contest brought us seven entries, all of which happened to take a fantastical approach. Voting is closed, and results are in! Thanks and congratulations to everyone who participated in writing or critiquing.
Winners
1st place: Raveneye "Of Mice and Emancipation"
2nd place: Alatariel "With Eyes Open"
3rd place: Foxxglove "Bequeathed"
Badges are coming soon. The image-hosting site seems to be down.
Edit: I've also just realized that poll results are visible, when I said they wouldn't be. Sorry about that, and I hope no one's too bothered. I've taken the poll link off the voting thread.
Honor points 1st Place takes 200 Hard HP (for a total of 300) 2nd and 3rd take 100 Hard HP (for a total of 200) All contestants take 100 Hard HP for entering (for a total of 100).
Now that it's over, what did people think of the contest? The prompt, the timeframe, the voting system?

Er, huh??? I'm speechless. Didn't see that one coming. Well, this makes my day. Thanks, all! Absolutely blown away by this. I know my story needs a lot of work, so I really do appreciate ya'll for seeing potential in it and for your great feedback that will only make it better. ScintillaMyntan - as for your questions -- "Now that it's over, what did people think of the contest? The prompt, the timeframe, the voting system?" Loved the voting system. The poll made this really enjoyable. Even though numerical averages helped me put the stories in some kind of order, the poll was really nice and clean. I'll be considering using it for later contests, for sure. As for the timeframe. The month-long writing period was a HUGE relief. A month for voting seemed a bit long and drawn out given there were only 7 entries. If we'd had twice that many entries, a month for voting woulda felt more balanced. I think we coulda got the voting done in two weeks, but the point of this contest was CASUAL, so never mind! The prompt itself was challenging--which made it wonderful. I had real trouble making it work, and my story totally reflected that. Some other contestants nailed it, however.

Congratulations, everyone! Well-deserved wins.
Scintilla - I really enjoyed the casual contest. I liked the month-long timeframe to get a story together, as well as the prompt. Although I'm saying this as someone who still waited basically a few days prior to get something together, lol. Next time, I'm hoping I won't have so much going on that I can actually take advantage of having the extra time.
I agree with Raveneye, I think the voting process could maybe be 2-3 weeks (depending on the number of entries).

Oh, forgot to answer the questions you asked!
I loved having a month to write. Voting could be a shorter period depending on how many entries there are (under 10 gets 2 weeks maybe?) and I liked the poll. I did miss the scoring aspect but that was only because I had NO IDEA how well or not well my story was doing or being perceived. Made it very ambiguous but that was just my own problem. I liked leaving more casual feedback, less structured.

I'm pretty much echoing other sentiments here, but I also liked the extra creation time that afforded the opportunity to give my often errant muse a poke or two in the ribs to get her thinking. I also got along much better with the less structured form of commenting. Critiquing in general is far from my strong suit....assuming I even have such an animal...!!! As for the voting timeline. I had no problem with it. Perhaps it was a little lengthy but better that than having to rush through in order for the choices to qualify.

At the risk of sounding like a whiney child....did I miss the post where we can go collect the badges? I do love me some badges.
(No surprise there I'm sure....see the collage below...)

Thanks. Hope to do more casual contests in December! And maybe shorten the voting time. At the risk of sounding like a whiney child....did I miss the post where we can go collect the badges? I do love me some badges. (No surprise there I'm sure....see the collage below...) I'll get to them soon. Last I checked the image hosting site wasn't working. And maybe I'm overthinking the design aspect, heh. Does the winner part of the badge also get the vertical ribbon? Centered name or left or right aligned? And is the alignment relative to the whole thing or to the part divided by the vertical ribbon!? I'll see if the image hosting is back up this evening.
