Halloween 2024Short fiction contestPromptFor this contest, we are retelling the fairy tale "Prince Lindworm."Take this tale of monsters and make it something new. You could simply rewrite the story with more detail and closeness than fairy tales come with, or you might shake it up more thoroughly. You might change the theme, move to a science fiction setting, add horror or humor, explore the witch's motivations, or have the Lindworm demand a ping-pong teammate instead of a spouse. But do leave enough similarities to the original that the rest of us can recognize how your story is derived from it.
Specifications• Up to 3,000 words, hard limit • Short prose fiction • Your story must be written specifically for this contest
• No fan fiction. No erotica. No content devised or written by AI

Sign me up! I have never heard of this fairytale, so using it as inspiration will be fun. Also, will be out of town for the first 4 days of the writing period, which will complicate things. Any story I enter is likely to be unpolished. Oh well.

Exciting! Hope we get a few more entrants. Also, just in case, since I'm realizing the formatting might look more confusing on the website than it did on my e-reader: the fairy tale does continue under the color illustration.
I set out to brainstorm this morning and liked the first idea I wrote down enough that I didn't want to write down any others. It's going to be fun.

Whew, that fairytale is seriously effed up. Dark as dark gets, really. Like, yikes. Enjoyed reading it immensely. Jaw on the floor. Angry comments in the margins. Yeah, I printed it out so I could jot down ideas. Still no solid ideas yet though. Working on it.

Yeah, I printed it out so I could jot down ideas. Still no solid ideas yet though. Working on it. Weird, I actually found it kind of optimistic. Depends what you focus on and what you think things symbolize, I guess.

Woohoo, I finally have an idea I really like. But it's a big idea, and I have only 3000 words to do it in. So we'll see if I can fit it all in. The right structure ought to help me do that. I hope.

Makes my skin crawl. I love discussing fairytales, and the things that lurk within them. Can't wait to see what aspects different people pull out of this one. I'm about halfway finished with my entry. Which is good since I'm about halfway through my word count. How is everyone holding up?

I'm a bit late to the party but I'll sign up tentatively. I have a vague idea but we'll see if I can get something together in time!

Also to clarify on the submission due date - I think October 15th is this Tuesday. Did you mean this Sunday or next?

Also to clarify on the submission due date - I think October 15th is this Tuesday. Did you mean this Sunday or next? Oops, I just copied that from last year's contest. Um, how about we say it closes next Friday, the 18th. I think these usually close on the 15th of the month, but signups are slow this time around.
Glad you're entering! I'll add you to the list.

So, my daughter went into the hospital on Wednesday with pneumonia (she's okay, just requiring oxygen support when she sleeps and antiotics, but she's going to probably be in the hospital for two more nights AT LEAST) and I'm trying to keep things running at home with the other two kids so I don't think I'm going to be able to finish the very small amount I've managed to write. I'm so sorry, but there's just so much going on right now. I'M GONNA TRY to finish the story but heads up...I might space on it.
Friday the 18th sounds great. Gives me a little more time.

My usual pattern is kicking in. I have lots of energy on the day I get my idea, and then it becomes boring and full of noticeable flaws. I haven't worked on it since that first day.
I feel that the 'obvious' and most meaningful way to go with this fairy tale is a story I'm not qualified to write. So I'll have to make do with this idea I had. It feels more like I'm scooping out elements from the fairy tale to use in my own story than genuinely interpreting the fairy tale as I understood it through my own world view, but maybe that's okay too.
Actually, writing this post made me think about the stakes of my story more and come up with a way I could go with this. Now I actually feel like writing a bit before bed.
Oh yeah, and I'll try to make a badge soon.

I find it so admirable how you make time for writing even with such a busy family life. And it's always a good thing when a health issue is something they can easily identify and treat.
