Hello, Fellow Writers and Creators!
I’m David Wooldridge, and I’m excited to join the LegendFire Critique Community as I dive deeper into my journey as a writer! While I’m still active-duty military (Explosive Ordnance Disposal, to be specific), retirement is finally on the horizon. As I approach this new chapter in life, my biggest goal is to transition into becoming a published author.
A little background:
I’ve been married since February 2008 to my amazing wife, and we have three kids: two girls (15 and 18), and a 9-year-old boy who keeps us on our toes. Our family also includes two big-hearted Rottweilers—Lincoln (5) and Archer (3)—who think they own the house. Writing is my passion, but family always comes first, and these five keep life interesting!
My writing journey:
I’ve recently completed my second manuscript, titled Cold Horizons (at least for now). It’s leaps and bounds better than my first, and I’m finally at the point where I’m ready to share it, get feedback, and see where it can go.
The plot of Cold Horizons blends elements of space opera and dystopian sci-fi, drawing on both my military experiences and my love for expansive, galaxy-spanning adventures. The story follows Rylan Graves, a former repo man for the galaxy’s most powerful corporation, as he gets entangled in a rebellion against the very system he once enforced. While Rylan aims to dismantle Deltarion Corporation’s covert project of turning innocent colonists into mindless soldiers, he has to face his own demons and the twisted morality of survival in a galaxy fractured by power, greed, and betrayal.
I’ve also begun working on its sequel, tentatively titled Desperate Measures. It’s early days yet, but the story will continue to explore the harsh realities of a post-Deltarion galaxy, introducing even darker corners of space—including the infamous Void Spiral. This sequel will lead into a broader series that I’m currently calling The Void Chronicles, though who knows what the final titles and story arcs will end up looking like!
I have sent my manuscript to a handful of publishing agents but no one is biting. It doesn't seem like science fiction is what people are looking for now but the publishing world looks for different things every season so I'll bide my time as I improve my writing skills.
Looking to the future:
Right now, I’m focused on building this series, learning from the feedback I get from communities like this, and improving my craft. My ultimate goal is to create a universe that readers can lose themselves in—full of complex characters, high-stakes action, and meaningful themes that explore loyalty, survival, and morality.
I’m really looking forward to getting to know everyone here, reading some incredible stories, and hopefully offering valuable feedback as I work to grow as a writer. Thanks for welcoming me into the community!
