In Cold Horizons, Rylan Graves is a former repo man for Deltarion Holdings, the galaxy’s most powerful corporation. After years of repossessing entire colonies that couldn’t meet their debts, he’s slowly realizing the horrific extent of Deltarion’s control over human lives. In this scene, Rylan has infiltrated one of Deltarion’s secret facilities and is viewing security footage of the company’s darkest operation: the transformation of ordinary people into “Nulls”—cybernetically controlled, mindless soldiers used to enforce corporate rule.
What he witnesses on the screen is the brutal, methodical conversion of unwilling people into biological machines. This excerpt shows Rylan’s shock and growing horror as he watches the company’s “medical” machines install implants into unconscious civilians, stripping them of free will. This process is his first glimpse into the cost of the system he’s upheld, and it’s a turning point for him, solidifying his resolve to expose Deltarion’s atrocities.
-------------------------------
Each machine had several long, needle-like appendages extending from mechanical arms, the tips twitching with mechanical precision.
The arms moved with an eerie grace, descending on their unconscious victims with clinical detachment. One machine’s needle pierced the soft flesh of a man’s temple, and a faint sizzle filled the air as the tip ignited, burning a precise, circular incision into his skull. A thin wisp of smoke curled into the air as the machines burned into their flesh. The sight sent a cold wave through me, my pulse quickening as I tried to process the horror unfolding on the screen. Without pause, the needle retracted, and a second arm inserted something shiny and metallic into the exposed brain tissue. It slid in effortlessly, as if the body were nothing more than a receptacle for its technology.
Tiny lights blinked inside the implant, a quiet signal of the nightmare beginning. Another arm whirred to life, this one equipped with a device that fused flesh back together over the incision with the same cold efficiency. There was no blood, no mess—the wound was immediately cauterized, leaving only a faint scar as a reminder of what had been done.
