Reading my first YA book, The Unexpected Queen.
FMC: 19yrs old, runs an estate, does the books mother trying to marry her off for money to help take care of husband and son. Legit medical expenses.
MMC: Early 20’s then figure he’s near 30, merman.
FMC: Competent and smart, acts say early 30’s, start’s relationship with MMC and acts like 13 year old who wants to play spin the bottle but not give a kiss.
Is this common for YA writing/story arcs?

Not sure YA, but I think I seen a couple Hallmark Romance Movies that had those plots. If it is, I wonder if its a trend. YA is less a genre in my opinion and more an age demographic (think Shonen and Shojo in anime terms) with the bare minimum requirement being someone at least middle school age to maybe 19 or 20 at most. DUe to this it needs to have its hands on the new hotness. What worked in early 90's anime didn't always work in 2000's anime which didn't always work in 2010's and so on. Same with YA. Dystopias was the hotness, right now i think its still Fey Romance that should have been put in adult Romance due to scenes at least a habaneros in spice. This might just be the new hotness if people can confirm this is a norm.

Not that I have seen. YA books are often 16-19 year olds in a science fiction setting. Mainly dystopian. Throw in a cheesy love triangle, broken families. Dedicated friends. Teachers with PTSD from past experiences, etc. A few battle scenes and a socio-political revolution.
Yeah... that about sums up the tropes. Ive never seen a YA fantasy book like this.
