Reflections

It had been safely stored for years, along with the silver salvers, crystal goblets and cut-glass dessert dishes. Only a crisis would necessitate reinstatement. Such a crisis now existed.

Upon removal of the purple velvet, stitched with silks of saffron yellow and cornflower blue, the dormant harbinger reawakened. Powers remained intact. A great relief. Spirit connections were fragile and easily broken.

"Mirror, mirror..."

Response was instantaneous.

"You are the fairest here 'tis true,
 But your daughter is far more beautiful than you."

Snow White secured the prophetic relic under lock and key again before sending for the Huntsman.

Double Indemnity

He’d promised a meal, with dessert. She wore a sleeveless yellow dress, as requested. The waiter approached and informed her of the crisis; that he wouldn’t be coming. She glanced at her empty martini glass and ordered another.

“I like your dress,” said a man in a brown suit at the next table.

She smiled.

“I’m partial to yellow,” he said.

“I know.”

Walking to his apartment, she fingered the small revolver in her jacket pocket. He felt the heft of his own gun at the small of his back.

“After you,” he said, pushing open the door.
