We paint you in feathers and gasoline. A traitor’s colours.
We loved you. We lost our children, so we loved you instead. Sent you to college. The first from our village. We were proud. Even now, we’re crying.
Except your mother. She told us who you brought back, who you loved. She made him dig a hole. Made him hop in. A game his people taught us.
What we must do breaks our hearts. Really. Someone lights the torch.
You shout, “He was ten when the war ended! He had nothing –“
Flames gobble up the rest of your words.

Inhuman
From the perfect replica of an ancient French tumbrel that lumbered and juddered along the cobbled streets toward the scaffold, the condemned waved enthusiastically at the crowd and blew kisses to the females in attendance. The scheduled form of execution had been abolished for centuries but reinstated to make an example of such an audacious revolutionary. A treasonous traitor who appeared oblivious to his barbaric fate.
Retribution was basically symbolic. He was hung, drawn and quartered, remaining stoic throughout as though he didn't feel a thing.
His entrails, including the sensors, actuators and power supply, were taken away for recycling.

Stepping Out
The traitor moved by cover of darkness. To be seen could prove detrimental at best, but his curiosity was aroused. He was out of his element, risking bodily harm from colleagues and adversaries alike. He approached the alley, hackles raised, senses alert.
“What’s up, Rex?”
Curses, it was Kenya, from next door. How did she know?
“Nothing, just walking,” the traitor said.
Kenya eyed the alley, heard the meowing from within. “I’m just… going to pretend I didn’t see this.”
Relieved, Rex sniffed her butt and they ran off, nipping at each other playfully.

I hoped it wouldn't come to this. But you must know by now this whole thing is rigged. We've got no choice.
Don't act so surprised. Too much is at stake, and you're in my way. It really is that simple.
Hate me as much as you want. Call me a traitor if that makes you feel better. But let me tell you one last thing. I don't hate you. You fought well. I truly enjoyed our time together. I'm... I'll remember you.
She ordered me to kill you. She didn't specify how. Hold still. I'll make it quick.
