“They’ll love you,” she said.
Right. Two thousand hard-nosed faces sit straight in velvety seats. Arms folded. Stopwatches turned upward. Suits crisp. Skirts pressed. Ready for me to fail.
Eyes closed to the blinding spotlight. Sweaty palms brushed over my glittery costume. Head tilted. Arm raised.
The music overrides my erratic heartbeat. I drown in it, twisting, spiraling, leaping. Nothing exists but my love of the dance.
Then, the last note. My final pose. A gasp for air.
Silence.
Only a performance a mother could love.
A suit with bushy red hair stands. He beams. And, there it is. Applause.

Fiddle-Dee-Dee
Lizzie had likened Melanie's last gasp to that of a fragile tendril vaporizing slowly into the frosty air. First Chair had always belonged to Lizzie by right and it had been so long in coming. In Lizzie's humble opinion, Melanie had never been truly talented enough for the premier position under any circumstances. The eventual outcome was a no-brainer really, much like Melanie's current condition. Lizzie smiled a little smile, delighted at her aptly witty comparison.
Bow raised and fingers poised, Lizzie waited for the Maestro's opening sweep of his baton and the well-deserved thunderous applause that would surely follow.
