Cut From The Same Cloth
My great-whatever-grandfather was never hampered by power outages. Electricity was far from the norm in his day, although I understand the Embankment and Holborn Viaduct were often bathed in the glow of arc lamps. Still, he plied his craft with supreme efficiency regardless and since those well-lit areas were not included in his regular stomping grounds, illumination was of no significance. Indeed, he did his best work under cover of darkness.
Blackouts can be useful, I don't deny, but they are far from necessary in order for me to follow in his footsteps. Come morning, the result will be the same.

Modern Monster
There are rare moments when a person is forced to stop and consider their actions. Their choices in life. Without distractions like the internet or electronic devices, this is such a moment. And I must confess, the realization is bleak. How have I accomplished so little? By this age, my mother had become a legend. And yet here I am, sunbathing on a rock in the middle of the sea without any sailors being lured to their deaths. What a disappointment I’ve become. But Minecraft is way more fun than devouring souls.

Squatter’s Rites-5 My guardian angel earned its wings, delivering me to my lawyer’s office safely. A dapperly dressed man was coming from a back room as I entered. “Mr. Plumber,” he said. “Yes Mr. Gyst, Dave will do.” “Paul, please. You look like you saw a ghost.” “You’re funny!” There was no outage of words as I explained what had happened. “A real live ghost? Did you take any pictures?” “You’re an ass. It’s my house and I want it out.” “I do evictions, not exorcisms. However, I have a client who might.” He opened his billfold and handed me a card.

Bittersweet Outage
"Internet's down!"
Two sweet words, putting the entire university at a standstill at 2:15 on a Friday afternoon. In my office alone sit twelve college administrators, and none of us have the foggiest idea of what to do. Our entire being is online. Digitized. Paralyzed.
It's Friday. It's over. First, we arrange the papers neatly on our desk, a task we reserve for 3:50.
Brave Jenny pulls out her cell phone. "Hey, Kim? Get the kids ready. Think I'm going to split early today."
Tim follows, then Kara, and finally Oscar, who's older than dirt.
"It's back up!"
Collective sighs. Papers reshuffle.
Jenny dials again. "Nevermind."

HALF-LIFE
The lab goes dark. The electricity arcing between nodes pops and dies. Outside, the storm rolls a tin can across the sky. Ruined. Years of work destroyed by nature’s fury. The gods have sided after all, and they have chosen sabotage.
A flash of lightning reveals a dozen cages and twisted bodies within. Wings, paws, talons meshed with arms. Mouths elongated into half-formed beaks, pincers, mandibles. Tails stunted at the bases of spines. They were to be glorious, not this. Grotesque abortions.
They begin to stir. To scream. To rattle bars. A cage door opens. I can’t run fast enough.

Thank you!!!
I missed the voting again! So sorry! I kept checking, and then when it came up I didn't see it. But I've been on my phone a lot this weekend instead of the computer. Maybe it doesn't load there?
