The following is a link to a collection of rants by Limyaael, an apparent legend in the world of fan fiction and traditional fiction alike. The list includes over 400 short-ish pieces on anything and everything related to writing, from improving dialogue and conversation scenes, to sex and death in fiction; how healers are oft misused, and ideas on handling trauma in a more realistic fashion. Tropes about merchants, making your villains actually intelligent (the story isn’t just about the hero, after all), writing non-cis-heterosexual characters, and overall a heaping helping of general advice on how to better worldbuild your settings for both sci-fi and fantasy. (This could certainly also go under Character Building as well, but I put it here because overall I think the brunt of the content is focused more on structural realism within your setting)
We used a few of her rants in the last IW workshop, and I've been perusing them ever since. There's some wonderful nuggets of wisdom to be found in here, especially the bits about slang in fantasy worlds (something I've had to weed out myself, either by deleting it or inventing new slang terms that mesh with my world's language systems), and considering things such as "How much food does it take to move an army halfway across a continent?" And of course, the tone of each rant is good for a chuckle.
Fair warning: the topics covered in these rants are far and wide, and from what I’ve seen don’t include content warnings, so please take care when perusing as there may certainly be discussions on otherwise traumatic or triggering topics for some. Also, Limyaael often imbues these nuggets of wisdom with a fair amount of salt, and as we all know, some of the best salt comes with a heaping helping of... language.
