when does it become illegal to use what another author has done?
What I mean is, if I use the plot of an old story: Thing A happens and here’s the fallout. Is that okay?

When it is obvious plagiarism. That seems fine to me.

Names, places, and details are your own, right? You're not using any of the author's text, dialog, description, right? There are LOTS of stories, probably most stories, in fact, that use the plot "Thing A happens and here's the fallout" in some respect. That's just a basic reflection of life, choices, and consequences. So more than likely, you're safe. No plot is new under the sun.

Thanks and yes to what you said. I was concerned about following a known plot/story arc. Yes, not the same place, characters or end result. My twist to it, so I’m good and if people recognize it, that’s not a bad thing.
