The Color of Revenge
Soldiers wear uniforms; so does she. The dress is satin, cranberry red. She paints her lips the same. The petrol canister is as red as a warning. The dizzying aroma fills the night as she pours a glistening trail about the house where he sleeps. His precious Vette is her getaway car, red as flame. She drives, holding the canister out the window until it runs dry.
She brakes. Red lights splash the wet line receding behind her. She lights a cigarette, takes a long drag, tosses it out the window.
Whoom. The night flares red.
She doesn’t look back.

Hexenhaus
Great-great-grandma loved Christmas and we loved great-great-grandma, so the holiday was special, even though she didn't know those of us who were born after the onset of dementia. She'd had a brother, long deceased, and kept his photograph in a pinewood frame. They looked very much alike.
We displayed her most treasured decoration -- brass carousel with spinning cherubs and flickering tea lights -- where she could easily see it. It brought a smile.
Thanks to well-fitting dentures, she enjoyed seasonal treats. Cinnamon stars, browned-butter shortbread and favorite cranberry cobbler. But not traditional lebkuchen.
Inexplicably, the sight of gingerbread always made great-great-grandma Gretel silently scream.

It’s Not What You think
Macintosh and Mirabelle were on a walk when they heard some crying, from the bridge.
“Is that Fenberry, atop the bridge,” asked Mirabelle.
“No, it’s his father Bearberry,” said Macintosh.
As they got closer, they saw it was Fen’s cousin, Cranberry. His stem tied to a rock as he stood ready to jump.
“Cran, what’s wrong,” asked Mac in surprise.
“I’m worthless. Everyone likes your juice better, I’m laughed at, only used in fruitcake and pemmican.”
Mirabelle, put a leaf around him.”
“That doesn’t matter. Whatever your faults, or mistakes you make, you’re better than all those that don’t try.”

Something Old, Something New
The venue was set for their autumn wedding; cranberry-colored cloth, soft glowing lanterns, an array of waxed fall leaves, strewn with golden embellishments. The guests waited outside, ready for the ceremony. All that was missing was Ruth.
"Ruthie?" called Joel. The familiar, delighted giggling of his daughter erupted from the next room. Entering, he found Ruth with two teacups, facing a vacant chair.
"Now is not the time for tea parties."
"But I haven't seen mum in such a long time." She frowned. "Besides, she came to tell you... it's okay to let go, and that Olivia seems really nice."

Cranberries
Smell of the place hit me first, and that flag above the door. I was desperate though, the beer was cheap and the Guinness cold. It’s not home, not even close, but the first drink went down easy. “Flyin' a bloody tri-color above a paintin' o' Belfast?” I said to the man behind the bar with a laugh. Then my eyes were drawn to an autographed record on the wall, and a photo of the recently departed singer of the band I loved so many years earlier. “Deloris was a real loss, and that fuckin’ song had nothin' to do with Zombies!”
