2022 Contest Season Launch!
SUBMISSIONS ARE CLOSED!
You never know what February’s contest will be. Last year we wrote short memoirs detailing our misadventures. This year, to launch our 2022 contest season, we’ve selected short fiction in a specific genre. And look! There’s an image prompt as well. Challenge yourself with something new!Your Genre: Noir
Your Prompt Image:
NOIR FICTION is about hopeless, nihilistic losers. So... Who is this person? What is she doing there? Is she a criminal? A victim? A witness? When you find out, let us in on the secret. CONTEST SCHEDULE Submissions open: Tuesday, February 1 Submissions close, voting begins: Wednesday, February 16, 11:59 pm, US Central Voting closes, winners announced: Wednesday, March 2 CONTEST BASICS One entry only per contestant Word limit: 3500 I am using THIS WORD COUNTER to ensure entries do not exceed the limit. Your story must be unique, written specifically for this contest. You may not submit a story you have already been working on or wrote in the past. Nor will we accept fan fiction – no pre-owned detectives, cops, or villains. Do NOT disclose which entry is yours. Please use this template when submitting:Title: Subgenre: (if applicable)Word Count:SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY Send your entry to me (Raveneye) via Private Message in BB Code according to THESE INSTRUCTIONS. Each entry will be posted anonymously in the Poetry Forum. I will not edit mistakes, typos, or for readability.
NOTE: The ProBoards private message system does NOT allow us to edit our PMs. If you see a problem with your entry, you may resend it up to the moment I post it for judging.
Each entry will be posted anonymously in the Fiction Forum.
CONTEST JUDGING Voting is open to all Legendfirians! Every contestant is REQUIRED to vote.
Unless excused for serious reasons, contestants must vote on all entries. Contestants will receive reminders of this requirement 1 week, 3 days, and 1 day prior to the end of the voting period. If you do not vote on ALL entries, your entry will be disqualified.
Please follow these steps:
1. Critique each entry according to the following three criteria. Respond with two sentences minimum per criteria. The goal is to help the author improve their craft. NOTE: voters who leave one-liner critiques to justify their vote will receive warnings according to our warning system.
* Technical writing elements: Which elements were technically sound in this entry? What still needs work? (consider writing fundamentals, the things found in grammar manuals, dictionaries, clarity guides, etc.) * Artistic writing elements: What appealed to me in this entry? What might benefit from revision? (Consider things like narrative hook, emotional impact, character arc, word choice, metaphor, imagery, uniqueness, etc.) * Prompt: How well does this entry relate to the prompt?
2. Assign each of the three criteria a numerical value, from 1 to 5, with five being the most favorable.
3. Add your scores and divide by 3 to get an average score. For example: 3.5 + 3 + 4 = 3.5 (The contest host will collect all the averaged scores for each entry and tally the overall average to determine the winners.)
You may vote for yourself to maintain your anonymity. This vote will not count toward the final score.
All entries must have the same number of votes for each vote to count. For example, if over half the entries receive 7 votes, we will set the final vote requirement to 7 votes per entry.RESOURCES WINNERS! 100 Hard Honor Points for all entrants, upon submitting their entry. 1st Place winners: an additional 200 Hard Honor Points, for a total of 300. Not sure I know exactly what I'm doing but I'll conduct some research and in short, will give it a shot. Count me in.

And here I thought that with Valentine's Day being in February, you might have chosen Romance. If you're trying to get me out of my comfort zone, this is definitely the way to do it!

I was flipping a coin between Romance, Gothic, and Noir. (A three-sided coin?) Anyway... I guess there's no reason a Noir tale can't involve romance, eh?

I'm in.
Can we use characters we've been developing for other projects? I have a character I've been wanting to use in a Noir type story for, literally, ten years, but I could never figure out what to do with him, so he has no story or setting. I can do something completely unique if I need to, I just need to let Conroy Quinn do something at some point.

I'll give it a try, maybe. I have some stuff going on the week it's due so it might not end up happening but I'll see if I can get something done before that week.

As long as the story is new, written from today forward, then it's permissible.

I really like the noir genre, but I haven't tried my hand at it myself. I'll tentatively throw my hat in the ring (pending ideas).
Question: Any kind of noir fiction? i.e. noir fiction with a sci-fi flair?

Question: Any kind of noir fiction? i.e. noir fiction with a sci-fi flair? I'm not in charge but I'd say yes! Noir is more a style, I think, and it can be added to any genre. Thoughts, RAVENEYE ? I'd love to read a noir sci-fi or noir horror or noir fantasy! Or does it have to be traditional noir set on Earth in the 1920/30s? If we can do anything noir style I might already have an idea...

Why do you always try and stop me from doing my other projects. As for Labrats concerns, a noir-romance if perfectly okay.

I have one more question - would noir fiction be comparable to film noir? I would read a noir novel for research but don't know if I'd have time for that. However, I could definitely find time to watch a movie. And I'm often inspired by films, more than books.

My stories are usually super tame. I've been wanting to try something a little darker or heavier; looks like now's the time.
Came to post the same question as Mazulla: are speculative elements okay? I looked up noir; would "dark, urban crime fiction where everyone's morally questionable" be a decent summary?

Is the prompt image iron clad. That is the story MUST be a decrepit hallway of an abandon/ fire torn building or is it representative and any simlar image is acceptable/

In the links provided in the Resources section of the announcement, there's mention of Horror Noir and Tech Noir, so why not sci-fi Noir or fantasy Noir? Bring it on.
Have y'all read the Jim Butcher novels? He's a detective/sorcerer in the modern real world. Not sure how Noir the series is, b/c the one novel I read seemed a bit light and humorous and ... shallow ... for Raveneye's understanding of Noir. Anyway... go for it. Give it your spin and have fun.
